Focused trauma therapy that often brings relief in just a few sessions

What is ART?

A Different Way to Work Through What Happened

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief, focused form of therapy that helps you process painful memories and experiences without having to talk through them in detail. Using guided eye movements and visualization, ART helps your brain update the way a difficult memory is stored so it no longer carries the same emotional weight.

During a session, you stay fully in control. Your therapist guides you through a series of gentle side-to-side eye movements while you bring a difficult memory or feeling to mind. The process helps your brain refile that memory in a way that removes its charge, so you can recall what happened without the dread, fear, or physical tension that used to come with it.

You're never asked to describe your trauma in detail. That's one of the things that sets ART apart from other approaches, and one of the reasons people who've struggled with traditional talk therapy often find real relief here.

How ART Works

What Happens in a Session

Most trauma therapies ask you to talk through what happened, repeatedly, until the memory loses its power. ART works differently. Rather than focusing on the story itself, it works with how your body holds that story, helping release the physical and emotional patterns that keep you stuck.

You don't have to describe your experience in detail. Instead, your therapist helps you bring specific images or sensations to mind and guides you through replacing the distressing parts with something more neutral or peaceful. You keep the memory. You lose the grip it has on you.

Research, including randomized controlled trials with both veterans and civilians, shows that ART can produce meaningful, lasting results for PTSD, depression, anxiety, and grief. Many people see real improvement in one to five sessions, and for those who've tried other therapies without getting the relief they hoped for, ART can be a turning point.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief, structured form of psychotherapy that helps reduce distress tied to difficult experiences or memories. Using guided eye movements and visualization techniques, ART helps your brain reprocess troubling images, sensations, and emotions so they no longer cause the same level of distress. Many clients experience meaningful relief within just one to three sessions.

No. One of ART's most distinctive features is that you do not need to describe your trauma or personal experiences in detail. You can fully process and resolve distressing memories privately while your clinician guides you through the technique. Many people find this sense of privacy and control to be one of ART's greatest strengths.

ART is both brief and highly focused. While therapies like EMDR, Prolonged Exposure, or Cognitive Processing Therapy can require several months of sessions, ART uses a structured protocol that allows meaningful change to occur in far fewer visits, often one to five sessions. ART also uses imagery rescripting to actively replace distressing images with neutral or positive ones, and clients are never required to retell their trauma in detail.

Many clients notice significant improvement within one to five sessions. Trauma from multiple events linked to the same issue can often be addressed in a single session. Your therapist will collaborate with you to determine the best pace and plan for your specific situation.
